Living with Limited Mobility?

+THE BASICS
Limited mobility or limited range of motion refers to the reduction in the normal movement ability of a joint due to certain conditions. Conditions like Paraplegia, Quadriplegia, amputation of any limb following an accident etc. can cause mobility limitation of permanent nature. Some common conditions causing limited mobility in seniors include Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, gout, Osteoporosis etc. Fractures or dislocation, muscular weakness, sprains and strains can also restrict your movement temporarily. After a surgery elderly patients are generally advised complete rest and resume their movement gradually after a few weeks. Stroke may also result in loss of mobility. Neurological disorders like Parkinson's disease, Ataxia result in loss of motor functions leading to involuntary shaking of limbs and weak footing. Differently abled individuals may also deal with mobility limitations due to cerebral palsy, autism, polio etc.
+MANAGING YOUR DAY
Physical therapy, healthy lifestyle and proper medication can help in better management of limited mobility. Certain assistive products help an elderly patient to cope better. Heat therapy products like infrared massagers, lamps, heating belts, hot and cold packs provide pain relief. Self-help aids like sock aid, no tie elastic shoelaces make daily living easier for seniors. Walking aids like walking sticks and walkers support in better movement. Supports and braces allow normal activity and relieve chronic pain and stiffness. Foldable commode chairs allow seniors to address their bathroom needs anywhere. For patients with incontinence, adult diapers and underpads are useful.
