Lymphedema

Living with Lymphedema

+THE BASICS
Lymphedema is a medical condition causing swelling of one or both arms and legs, due to impaired flow of lymph through the lymphatic system. The causes of lymphedema can be genetic or result from cancer treatment or a parasitic infection. Lymphedema symptoms are swelling, redness, pain, warmth, tingling sensation, limited range of motion, stiffness or reduced flexibility in the joints.
+MANAGING YOUR DAY
Lymph drain therapy, pneumatic compression, proper diet, avoiding heat on arm or leg and tight fit clothing help in the management of lymphedema. You may consider regular gentle exercise to improve circulation of lymph and reduction in swelling. Compression braces and wraps ensure the proper flow of lymph. Hot and cold gel packs, heating pads provide pain relief. Skincare of legs and arms is also very crucial to prevent ulceration and infection, foot warmer and foot bubble spa will help you to take better care of your legs and feet. Walking sticks and walkers will support you in walking in case of limited mobility due to swelling. Anti-slip mats, tapes, and floor polish prevent falls or slips.
