Carnatic music evolved from ancient Hindu traditions and is among the two main subgenres of Indian Classical music - the other being Hindustani music. The Sanskrit term, ‘Karnataka Sangitam’ means traditional or codified music. Carnatic music focuses mainly on vocal music. Even when the tracks are instrumental, they are meant to be performed in a singing style called ‘gayaki’. This classical music is performed by a small group of musicians - the vocalist being the primary performer, traditionally accompanied with a melody instrument usually a Violin and a rhythm instrument which is usually a Mridangam. They also use a Tambura for the humming drone sound throughout the performance, which adds an altogether different dimension to the music. Carnatic music focuses mainly on vocal music. Even when the tracks are instrumental, they are meant to be performed in a singing style called ‘gayaki’.
